這幅作品講述了這樣的故事：一個七歲的男孩因為在猶太人國家唱基督教歌曲而被割斷喉嚨，圣母瑪麗亞顯靈，向他嘴里放入谷物，他又奇跡般的繼續唱起來，不久男孩死去，被作為殉教者埋葬。畫面中白百合象征純潔，罌粟象征安慰，向日葵象征崇拜，桂竹香象征逆境中的忠誠。

Laus Veneris

作品的題材來源于一個德國傳說：流浪騎士唐豪舍發現了維納斯堡，那是掌管愛的女神維納斯的地下宮殿，被維納斯的魔法蠱惑，唐豪舍在那里和維納斯住了一年。唐豪舍為他的行為感到羞恥，他到羅馬請求教皇的寬恕，教皇說寬恕是不可能的，除非他的法杖開花。唐豪舍回到維也納，三天后，教皇的法杖奇跡般的開花了。
詩人Algernon Swinburne在他的詩 'Laus Veneris' 中如此描述維納斯：
Her little chambers drip with flower-like red, ...
Her gateways smoke with fume of flowers and fire,
With loves burnt out and unassuaged desires
Between her lips the steam of them is sweet
The languor in her eyes of many lyres... ...
Her beds are full of perfumes and sad sound,
Her doors are made with music, and barred round
